5 Tips to Protect Your Hyundai from Hail Damage

 


Those of us who live in the Midwest know all too well how hailstorms can cause serious property damage. And cars are some of the worst targets. Broken windshields and dented metal can get expensive quickly. There may not be any way to stop the hail from falling, but you can protect your Hyundai from harm with these simple tips:

1)   Park Indoors Whenever Possible

It may sound obvious, but religiously checking the weather forecast won't guarantee advance warning of a hailstorm. When spring starts knocking at the door and precipitation rises, play it safe: do whatever you can to get your car inside a garage or under a sturdy structure.

2)   Grab Some Heavy Blankets

If you truly don't have a garage or another way to protect your automobile during hail events, hope isn't lost. Cover the car's body with a few layers of thick blankets, comforters, towels; anything you can find to provide some extra cushioning.

You may consider driving around with something similar in the trunk, just in case you're caught in a sudden hailstorm while out of the house. Speaking of which…

3)   Caught Unaware? Improvise!

Sometimes hail will start coming down when you're out and about - but try not to panic. If you don't have those thick blankets on hand, you can remove the floor mats from your car and use them for roof-based protection in a pinch. You might also wish to seek out the nearest parking garage (at a mall, for instance) or bridge to seek cover underneath. Remain careful not to spend any more time on the open road than is necessary.

4)   Avoid Trees

Not all structures are created equal. While it might sound intuitive to take shelter underneath the biggest tree you can find, this is actually rather dangerous during strong storms. While it's true that the tree's limbs will deflect a certain amount of hail away from your vehicle, broken branches have the potential to cause far more damage to the car than a tiny ball of ice ever could.

5)   Protect Your Wallet With Comprehensive Insurance

Mother Nature can be cruel and sometimes you simply won't be able to protect your car against every little impact. Investing in a comprehensive insurance policy will help in the event of catastrophic weather damages. Be sure to read the fine print, as many of the cheaper policies won't include this coverage by default!
