How Vehicle Registration Works

Usually, if you purchase a new car from a dealership like Rosen, we handle the title and registration. But, if you're planning on moving to a new state, you'll need to register your new car after you move.

In Illinois, your new Hyundai needs to be registered within 20 days. Before the IL car registration can be completed, you must get auto insurance. Then you'll go to the local SOS often to submit various documents such as:

       An Application for Vehicle Transaction

       Name and addresses of lienholders

Payment for registration and tax fees

       The vehicle's title

What is a Car Title?

Car titles prove ownership of a vehicle. Your vehicle can't be proven to be yours without this document.

Titles generally include the following:

       17-character VIN

Year, make, and model of the vehicle

       Odometer reading

The date that the odometer reading was done

The date on which the title was issued

       Vehicle color

Owner or owners of the vehicle

       Owner's address

Illinois is a title-holding state, meaning the lender keeps the car title until the loan is paid off.
