Valet Parking Without the Valet: How Does Remote Smart Park Assist Work?

Some Hyundai vehicles have autonomous active parking assist systems. When the technology is engaged, it identifies an open parking space and then parks itself with its driver sitting inside or standing outside of the vehicle. Once a spot has been detected you will hear a beep. Instructions will appear on the instrument display or the infotainment system telling you when to stop and shift into reverse. The sensors also detect object that might be in the path of the car as it moves. Similar to other park assist systems, it works slowly. In heavy traffic areas, such as when parking on a busy street or parking lot with many pedestrians, using it could perfectly can take some time.

 

How Do You Use It?

Smart Park Assist is controlled two ways: 

• Via the car's key fob
• Via the digital key

The digital key is still currently only available on Android operating systems, whereas if you have any other type of smartphone you will have to use the key fob. There are two ways to start the system:

•  If the car is off - lock the car, start it remotely, wait a few seconds and the push the button to roll the car forward or backwards.
• If the car is on - push the Smart Park button, put the car in park and then exit the car and engage the system remotely.

It's important to note that all the vehicles doors must be closed or the car will not move.

 

When/Where Can It Be Used?

• Empty parking lots
• Driveways with staggered vehicles
• Parallel parking
• And much more!

 

A Few Helpful Tips:

• Parallel and Perpendicular Parking Types: On some vehicles, you can switch between parallel and perpendicular parking types. To do this, select the parking type from the infotainment screen.
• Stay alert while using Automatic Parking Assist. Always be prepared to avoid vehicles, pedestrians or other objects by braking and accelerating.
• There are 12 sensors located on the front and rear bumpers. They should be regularly cleared of any debris. Keeping the sensors clean is important to keeping this feature working effectively.
