With trailer brakes, the XRT tows 4,500 pounds; the gas SE, SEL, Limited and Calligraphy tow 3,500; and every hybrid tows 2,000. Without trailer brakes, the limit is 1,650 pounds for any Santa Fe.

Hyundai’s 4,500-pound figure requires the XRT and a trailer with its own brakes, and every rating assumes a properly equipped vehicle. The hitch and ball mount are Hyundai accessories, sold separately or together as the Tow & Go Package, and trailer pre-wiring is standard.

The XRT’s HTRAC all-wheel drive is standard and can move up to half the torque rearward, which helps when a ramp is wet or a campsite is soft. Terrain Mode adds snow, mud and sand settings, and the XRT rides 8.3 inches off the ground.

Every Santa Fe has Trailer Sway Control, and the 2.5-liter turbo sends its 311 lb-ft through an eight-speed automatic. Highway Driving Assist on the XRT helps on the long interstate leg of a trip north.

Cargo room grows in three steps: 14.6 cubic feet with all three rows in use, 40.5 once the third row drops into the floor, and 79.6 with the second row folded as well.

The second row releases from the cargo area, the hands-free liftgate opens on its own, and roof rails on the SEL and up carry 220 pounds. Hyundai also offers accessory cross rails for a cargo box or bike carrier.
